I gather that Andy Quinn no longer works there and the site is closed for a number of years for the removal of huge amounts of asbestos.
The site cannot be opened for civilian visits due to Health and Safety - asbestos - and that it is on a military base. Most photos you have seen were taken by Government (MOD) professional photographers.

How long would they have expected to stay down there, had the worst come to the worst? Weeks? Months? Years?

Yes, site 1 and 2 were other MOD sites in the Corsham area, they were both overground places.
