I was very lucky to get a tour down there in 2006 with other members of the Dog Section from RAF Brize Norton. Was like a James Bond film set. The telephone exchange was massive and still had thousands of telephone directories, which i took great delight in finding my old address from the 70's. Also the supply store was like going back in a time capsule.Well worth a visit if you can blag one now.
I did my national service at Basil Hill Barracks in 1952
I worked down the tunnel when it was a amunition storage we use to work eight hous a day examing amunition before sending it to Korea
In about 1974 I was a young soldier serving at what was then the School of Preliminary Education (SPE) at Basil Hill Barracks, Corsham. I was invited for a look into a mysterious small building. In the building was a staircase leading down over 300 steps into the underground world. Absolutely fascinating, I didn't realise then the importance of the place and feel privileged to have seen it.
During the early 70s I worked for a horticultural contractor around all the MOD sites in Corsham and surounding area. We also cleared areas of the underground ie... rubbish out of Monkton Farleigh, Tunnel Quarry, Spring and Burlington. A special pass was given to us when we went down Burlington. What brilliant memories
